An Operating System is the fundamental software which controls a computer system. It takes care of how the hardware behaves, the communication with peripheral devices including a monitor, a printer or a keyboard, the allocation of memory between the installed applications, along with the prioritization of applications if several run concurrently. Every program that is installed on a computer works by sending requests to the OS for various services by using an application program interface (API). The contact with the OS can be achieved through a Graphical User Interface (GUI) or a command line. In the web hosting world, the Operating System is what runs a server and all the software installed on it, which includes not only website scripts, but also any other application for instance a VOIP or a game server. In case there are virtual machines created, they employ a guest OS that runs on the server host OS.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Servers
We offer three Operating Systems with our dedicated server
solutions - CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian. They are all different Linux distributions and we offer them not only because they're totally free and they will not increase the low price of your new server, but also because they are really stable and secure. Each one of them is supported by a large community of web developers, so you'll be able to choose from a myriad of software packages that you can install on your server in case the application that you want to work with has specific requirements. The Operating System will also determine what hosting Control Panel you can use as the Control Panels that we offer are compatible with particular OSs only and because we want to provide you with as much versatility as possible, we offer several OSs and multiple Control Panels. In case you choose a server with a given OS, we could change it upon request in the event that it turns out that you will need alternative one. We could also keep the OS updated on a weekly basis as a part of the optional Managed Services upgrade.
